FAQS:
  • Why does my pet need to be seen by a board certified orthopedic surgeon?
A board certified surgeon’s expertise will compliment the care your regular vet has started. Your vet may not have the right equipment, experience or training needed for certain diagnostics or surgery.
  • What do I need to bring with me to my appointment?
You will need to bring your pet (on a leash or in a carrier), any radiographs that have been taken, any lab/tests results, pertinent records, a list of current medications including the dose your pet is receiving and how often they are taking them.
  • Can I schedule surgery without a consultation?
No, all patients must have a consultation appointment with Dr. Brown before surgery can be scheduled. At the time of the consultation a plan will be made for your pet specifically. This gives us time to schedule the surgery and make sure any pre-operative testing that is required is done. Emergency cases are an exception.
  • Why does it cost so much?
Costs at a specialist practice are generally slightly higher than a general practice. The doctor has gone through additional schooling and special course training for surgery; Specialty offices have highly skilled nursing staff and equipment.
  • What happens to my pet overnight?
During the night time hours your pet will be watched by the doctor and nursing staff of Ohlone Veterinary Emergency Clinic. Dr. Brown will give them instructions as to necessary care through the night (patient care and monitoring, as wells as pain management and antibiotics).
  • What should I expect during the initial exam?
Dr. Brown will be reviewing any records presented, reviewing all radiographs and examining your pet. You may be asked to walk your dog around the room, office or in the parking lot for gait analysis. Dr. Brown usually will do a hands on exam and palpation of affected joint or area of the body. Once the exam is complete, Dr. Brown will inform you of his findings, explain whether further work-up or diagnostics is needed, and present you with the options and surgical procedures recommended for your pet’s condition.

Receptionists will work with you on picking an appropriate date for any further work-up or surgery. Surgical patients will be provided additional drop off information and given a surgical folder with after care instructions.
  • How do I make an appointment?
To schedule an appointment for consultation, work-up, or surgery you can call 510-657-6343 and Danielle will assist you. Non-urgent appointments can also be scheduled by email directed to Danielle at dani@vetortho.com.
Appointment times are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:00am to 11:30am and Friday afternoon 2:00pm to 4:30pm. Thursdays are by special arrangement. What forms of payment do you accept?
  • Payment is expected at the time of services.
Payment is due in full for all consultations and work-ups. There is a deposit of half the estimate required for surgery at the time of drop-off and the remainder of the balance is due at time of your pet’s release. We accept cash, check, debit card, visa, MasterCard, and CareCredit. We do not offer any payment plans. You may use your visa or MasterCard or apply for CareCredit here in the office. CareCredit has a 3-month same as cash plan, or extended care plans of 2, 3, 4, or 5 years at the current interest rate: Care Credit - www.carecredit.com
  • Will my regular vet be updated on my pet’s condition?
We will be updating your regular/referring vet as your pet is seen by phone, followed by a letter for his or her records. Lab work and surgery reports will be in writing once performed.
  • Do you offer regular vet services?
We do not provide general or routine care. We recommend that every patient have a general practitioner to provide immediate and routine care as a preventative to help keep your pet healthy.
  • Can you recommend a regular vet?
Due to the nature of this practice we cannot recommend a particular veterinarian for your pet. We can give you several names of veterinarians in your area. You may want to check with family and friends for a referral.
  • Do I need to have x-rays taken before my pet is seen?
If your regular vet has not taken radiographs that is okay. Sometimes radiographs are not necessary. Other times your regular vet may opt not to take films if the patient is not in immediate need due to extra costs of anesthesia and films or knowing that we may need to repeat them.
